Forgotten Buffalo: Historic & Hip...An Urban Explorer's Guide to the Buffalo-Niagara Region: Unique Landmarks, Historic Gin Mills, Old World Neighborhoods, History, Nickel City Oddities, Tours and More!
Located in an almost forgotten corner of southeast Chicago, the neighborhood of Hegewisch is an isolated blue collar community boarded by Lake Calumet, railroad tracks and a Ford assembly plant. It is in this almost ideal "classic tavern" environment that one can find Steve’s Lounge. Steve’s is one of the best preserved examples of a postwar, lounge style tavern in all of Chicago and perhaps the country. A true treasure chest in an era of chain restaurants and overly remodeled corner taverns. Well maintained wood, time ceilings, indirect lighting, curved bar, display cases packed with collectible whiskey bottles, a vintage telephone booth…everything that makes a classic a classic. Clean and inexpensive, Steve’s should be considered one of the last great old time gin mills in Chicago. Beer sampled: What else but Old Style?. Add an afternoon Cubs game on the TV and you have the perfect tavern experience in the Windy City!
