Generations of Broadway Fillmore residents fondly remember Spolka Clothing located at 1058 Broadway. For over 110-years, the men’s clothier supplied some of the finest suits in East Buffalo. Alexander Szczukowski opened the men's clothing store in 1890 after emigrating from Poland. His son Louis took over the family-owned store in 1941. His son, Louis Jr. operating the business until his death in October 2000. The family held a final sale in November 2000. At one point, the family also operated a location in Detroit, Michigan.
This collection of photos were taken during the summer of 1999. Note: Spolka’s antique wood and glass cabinetry survives as part of the displays at the Buffalo Transportation Museum. Founder James Sandoro purchased the store’s fixtures after it closed its doors.
